Chemistry

The Chemistry Department supports the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Foods and Markets (VAAFM) in areas of Watershed Monitoring, Air Pollution Control, Pesticides, Waste Management and Consumer Protection.

Inorganic Chemistry

Metals Center, Nutrients and Non-Automated Chemistry

Activities:

  • Analysis of airborne metals
  • Water quality – chemistry
  • Analysis of heavy metals in fish
  • Verification of Meat, Feed and Fertilizer compositions

Analyses are performed using the following techniques:

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS)
  • Automated Chemistry
  • Non-automated Chemistry
  • Classical Wet Methods

Organic Chemistry

Volatiles and Semi-volatiles

Activities:

  • Vermont Air Quality Monitoring Stations
  • Pesticides in surface waters, wells
  • Pesticide use enforcement cases
  • Contracted pesticide residual testing

Analyses are performed using the following techniques:

  • Gas Chromatography
  • Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy
  • High Pressure Liquid Chromatography
  • Ultra High Pressure Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy
