COVER CROP SEQUENCES TO SUPPORT POLLINATORS AND SOIL HEALTH

Description: This growing season, ten Vermont diversified vegetable farms tried season long sequential plantings of flowering cover crops. Cover crops were allowed to bloom to provide pollinators with pollen and nectar forage in addition to supporting soil health goals. We will talk about this work, ideas for cover crop varieties plant, when to plant, and what is being learned about advantages and tradeoffs of this practice approach related to soil health and pollinators. Come explore if this might fit into your management practices and what opportunities there are to incorporating a similar approach on your farm.

Description: UPDATED DATES! Join us for this two-day course, Introduction to Butchering I - Poultry, Lamb, and Goat, hosted by Vermont State University's Center for Agriculture and Food Entrepreneurship (CAFE), and led by Elizabeth Roma of Roma's Butchery in South Royalton, Vermont. Learn the art of butchering poultry, lamb, and goat, ideal for those pursuing a butchery career or interested in meat preparation. Discover the global appeal of poultry, particularly chicken, valued for its quick maturity and efficiency in feeding. Gain essential skills in poultry cutting and effective marketing strategies. Explore the unique role of lamb in the meat industry, shipped predominantly as whole carcasses to retailers and food services. Participants will gain hands-on experience, and will get to take home their very own prepared meat cuts as well as an entry level meat cutting knife. Cost: $495 Accepting VSAC Advancement Grant and AmeriCorps Segal Grant.

Thinking Climate Smart on Pastures

Description: Join this information- and farmer-focused discussion about ways to be more climate smart with farm operations. Sam Dixon from Shelburne Farms will talk about ways they are working towards their net-zero goal including silvopasture, riparian buffers, and introducing biochar onto their fields. Meet at the dairy barns where Sam will give an overview of their operation and rotational grazing practices. Walk to the new silvopasture planting to discuss the process of planting trees in pasture and different ways to implement silvopasture (depending on your farm goals). Explore a pasture or two with established trees for cows to use as shade and see riparian buffers planted by the lake. Walk back to the barn to discuss their biochar project (time permitting). Snacks, refreshments, and boot covers will be provided. This is a free program. Confused about how to get help after a flood or during a drought?  Have ideas for better disaster response?  Come to this farmers’ meeting about flood and disaster response on Sept 3, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm (online).  First we'll talk about what to do, how to document losses, and what resources are available to us in 2024.  Then we'll talk about our experiences recovering from disasters like last year’s frost and floods, and how we can improve disaster response for the next time.  Because you can expect a next time.
