VT DIRECTIVE 7230.1 ONGOING VERIFICATION OF PRODUCT FORMULATION AND LABELING TARGETING THE NINE MOST COMMON (“BIG 9”) FOOD ALLERGENS

For use beginning on 1/19/2024
This directive provides instructions to inspection program personnel (IPP) for performing the “Big 9” Formulation Verification task in the Public Health Information System (PHIS). IPP verify that establishments are accurately controlling and labeling the nine most common (“Big 9”) food allergens in meat (including Siluriformes products) and poultry establishments. These allergens are designated as “major food allergens” by the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) of 2004 and Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act (FASTER Act) of 2021. This directive is being reissued in its entirety to add sesame as the ninth major food allergen, clarify that the milk allergen is “cow’s milk,” and include an additional example for soy products.
