There was something missing in Montpelier for most of the year. As we looked across the way from the Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets at 116 State Street there was a bare spot on top of the State House. We were prepared to manage this new look for the summer and fall but if it dragged into the winter, we were in trouble. We were lucky she came back just in time. On a crisp winter-like day, hundreds were on hand as the new Ceres, the Goddess of Agriculture came home and once again was carefully placed atop the State House. We missed her. Vermont missed her.
As we enter a new year and a new legislative session, we will look at Ceres often. She will inspire us and guide as we work to improve our economy. We will ask all those that work in and around the State House to focus on Vermont’s farmers. It’s no secret the farm economy is fragile and needs attention. We will engage all that will listen. We need to develop economic policies that improve Vermont’s farm economy. We encourage you to get involved. Please send us your suggestions and thoughts. Reach out to your State Senator or Representative and help them develop policies or laws that get farmers to a better place. The best ideas come from the field.
We encourage you to keep your eye on the “Northern Tier Dairy Summit” that is scheduled for April 1-2 at Jay Peak. Hosted by the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets this two-day event is focused on positive strategies and action aimed at improving the dairy industry in the Green Mountains. If you want more information, please contact us at 802-522-2252. We are confident this summit will set the stage for a brighter future for Vermont’s farmers in 2019 and beyond. Ceres is with us.
