WATERBURY, VT – The National Weather Service has forecast warm temperatures and rain for Vermont this weekend.  While a break in the cold weather we have been experiencing lately could be a nice respite, the new conditions could present some challenges for Vermonters.

FSA Program Available for Damage to Sugar Bushes due to Recent Ice Storm in Vermont

Colchester, VT, December 27, 2013 – USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Vermont State Executive Director, Bob Paquin encourages maple producers in Vermont who sustained damage from the recent ice storm to contact their county USDA office whether or not they have participated in USDA programs in the past and whether or not they carry crop insurance. FSA’s Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) may be available to help compensate them for losses.

State Agriculture Officials Urge Farmers and Pet Owners to Continue Precautionary Measures as Ice Storm-Related Issues Continue

The weather forecast indicates that temperatures will remain low throughout the week, thereby not allowing the ice to melt, and winds may increase, causing power lines to be damaged. The Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets recommends that farmers who live in a region of the state where icing occurred keep a close eye on weather reports, and take the following steps:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in conjunction with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, is holding a series of six public meetings in December, 2013, to discuss the new phosphorus plan that is under development by the EPA for the Lake Champlain Basin, referred to as a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).
