Pesticide Applicator & Dealer Resources

Pesticide Applicator Certification

Pesticide applicator certification is a regulatory program administered by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets.  Certification is one component of the program to require that individuals  applying pesticides do so in a proper and legal manner.

Types of Applicator Certification in Vermont

For more information on becoming certified, follow the link of the applicator type that best describes the type of pesticide-related work you plan to do.

Private Applicators - Farmers of all kinds including (but not limited to) dairy and those that grow row crops, forage, vegetables, berries, apples, grapes, nursery stock, Christmas trees, and more.

Commercial Applicators - Employees of companies that perform (but not limited to) the following services:  pest control, mosquito control, landscape, lawn care, tree care, agricultural custom application, forest pest control including invasive plant control, vegetation control (right-of-way), aquatic weed control, wood preservation, aerial application.

Non-commercial Applicators - Golf course superintendents, groundskeepers, those that perform in-house cooling tower maintenance, and others that may use pesticides on their employer's property. Also includes those that sell pesticides from a location outside of Vermont as a travelling sales person.

Government Applicators - Employees of federal, state, or municipal departments or agencies that use (including the recommendation of) pesticides as part of their job.

Pesticide Dealer Licensing

Pesticide dealer licenses are issued to individuals that sell Class A or Class B pesticides from a retail outlet located in Vermont.

Class A and Class B Pesticide Dealer Licensing
Class C Pesticide Dealer Licensing (part of the Retail License program)

Purchasing Applicator Certification Manuals

Although you are taking exams and getting certified in Vermont, the manuals from Cornell University in New York are the study materials for almost all Vermont certification categories.  Please take care to order the correct manual as the state of New York sometimes uses different category names and numbers than Vermont.  In other words, the manuals you need to purchase and study may not have the same category number or title as the Vermont Category that you are studying for.  It is a good idea to call or email the Certification &Training Coordinator at the Vermont Agency of Agriculture if you have any questions or want to confirm which manuals to order.  You are ultimately responsible for purchasing the correct manual and knowing which exam or exams you need to take to get certified in Vermont.

Call Anne Macmillan at (802) 828-3479 or email with questions, or to purchase the Pesticide Dealer Training Manual.
