The Vermont Farm Show, founded in 1931, is an annual gathering that allows both agriculture professionals and the public to meet with vendors, preview products and machinery and network with the farm community at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in Essex Junction. The second night of this year’s Farm Show, January 31st, will be the 7th annual Consumer Night which will celebrate the diversity of Vermont agriculture with the Winter Buy Local Market and Capital Cook-Off.
The Winter Buy Local Market to take place in the Blue Pavilion from 4-7pm, will feature nearly fifty farmers and producers of local cheese, meat, milk, maple syrup, jams, culinary oils, honey, wine, beer, spirits, wool, and handmade crafts as well as ready-to-eat prepared foods such as Vermont-made gluten free spätzle and ice cream cones from Kingdom Creamery. The exciting new addition of a “crepe happy hour” this year will be hosted by Skinny Pancake, who will offer combinations of Champlain orchards apples, Bridport Creamery cheese, Huards Family Farm goat's milk caramel, and Babette's Table salami in both sweet and savory crepes from 4-5pm.
Shoppers who post a photo of their Buy Local Market experience to social media with #RootedInVermont or #VTFarmShow18 during the event will be entered into a drawing for one of three great local prizes.
Beginning at 5:15 PM, watch Vermont State Representatives, State Senators and Agency of Agriculture staff battle in a contest to showcase local foods in the Capital Cook-Off, hosted by the Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts. This “Iron-Chef” style competition gives teams a chance to shop the Buy Local Market and prepare an attractive, delicious, and #RootedInVermont dish featuring a secret local protein unveiled only moments before the competition begins. After a demanding hour of cooking, all three teams will submit their dishes to a panel of judges comprised of local chefs, restaurateurs and public officials; dishes will also be submitted for sampling by attendees to choose the “public pick” winner.
