Diseases Carried by Ticks

There are 6 known diseases carried by ticks in Vermont: Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, relapsing fever, and Powassan virus. Ticks are known to carry other diseases, but we have not found evidence of them in Vermont. The blacklegged tick (or deer tick), Ixodes scapularis, is of greatest concern for tick-borne diseases. This tick species has been found in every county of Vermont. We are conducting surveillance of ticks to establish the risk for tick-borne diseases in Vermont. We encourage Vermonters to consider using repellants to protect themselves and their loved ones against tick bites (see Tick Management). Please look at our reports page (see Testing Ticks for Disease) to see our results from testing ticks for these diseases.
