Christmas tree species such as balsam, Fraser, and Canaan firs, as well as spruce and pine, originating from Vermont are subject to the Federal Spongy Moth (FKA Gypsy Moth) Quarantine and may also be affected by various state-specific or international regulations. Shipments sent to areas where certain pests are not yet established must be inspected and certified as pest-free before mailing.
The Plant Health Team offers inspection services for growers shipping Christmas trees, boughs, and greenery from Vermont to locations outside the Spongy Moth Quarantine areas ((USDA quarantine map). Businesses are responsible for understanding and complying with federal and state plant protection laws. Detailed information about plant regulations for each state is available at the National Plant Board website.
