The Consumer Protection Section is responsible for inspection of the following devices located throughout Vermont:
Retail Price Scanners are devices located at checkout that record the price of the product. Pricing in retail stores is monitored to ensure that customers are being charged the correct price. A store is allowed no more than a 2% error in its pricing.
Small Capacity Scales are scales used in retail stores, farmers markets, etc. with a capacity of 0.001 lbs. to 100 lbs.
Medium Capacity Scales are scales used in weighing larger weights, grain, deer, etc. with a capacity of 101 lbs. to 3000 lbs.
Large Capacity Scales are scales used to weigh very large and heavy weight; trucks, asphalt, concrete aggregate, etc. with a capacity over 3000 lbs.
Liquid Measuring Devices are meters used to measure gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, etc.
Vehicle Tank Meters (Oil Meters) are meters used on delivery trucks and at bulk plants for heating oil and other fuels.
Liquid Propane Meters are meters on delivery trucks and fill plants used for refillable cylinders.
All devices must meet specifications and tolerance in NIST Handbook 44.
