Johne's Disease

Johne's disease is a progressive, incurable, wasting disease caused by bacterial infection of the intestines and other tissues. It is transmitted from an infected animal to herdmates primarily via the fecal-oral route. Since signs of Johne's disease are often sub-clinical, identifying infected cattle and managing the disease can be difficult. The University of Vermont Extension website provides resources and tools to veterinarians and herd owners to help manage this economically important disease.

The Agency of Agriculture has partnered with the University of Wisconsin to provide to Vermont veterinarians at no charge Johne's disease management initial and renewal certification. Please contact the Animal Health Office for more information.
